Minimum age to enter the class is (16) years of age. Students under the age of eighteen (18) must have a legal guardian or parent present at the first session of class. The guardian needs to provide signatures for a criminal history background check and other paperwork required in the class.
Attendance by the student and guardian at the first session is mandatory. Pre-registration is required and registrations are not confirmed until a form of payment is provided. Students must have a photo ID available at the state examinations.
Course Description:
An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is a member of the pre-hospital team, providing care to patients who may call for an ambulance due to sudden illness or injury. An EMT cares for a variety of illnesses and injuries, simple to complex, in the pre-hospital setting. An EMT must be able to take vital signs, splint injuries, do CPR, assist patients with medications, apply oxygen, lift and extricate patients out of their homes, and use the automated external defibrillator.
The EMT must possess the knowledge and skills consistent with the certification from the Department of Health. The EMT must have a good disposition and good communication skills with patients in adverse settings. An EMT needs to be flexible, as situations can change in a moment’s notice.
An EMT must have the ability to stand, walk, lift, and carry patients out of buildings and down steps. The EMT needs the physical and psychosocial skills to care for patients with sudden illness or injury. The EMT must develop patient rapport with patients of different cultural, socioeconomic and age groups.
PROGRAM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: This is a noncredit certificate program. It is not a requirement of the HACC EMT program to have a GED or high school diploma; however some employers require it upon hiring EMT candidates. Students should be able to lift to a height of 33 inches, carry and balance a minimum of 125 pounds (250 pounds with assistance). A State Police Criminal Record Check will be obtained; reading and writing skills must be at or above the 9th grade level.
LENGTH OF THE PROGRAM: HACC’s EMT Basic program is 140 hours in length. Students may be dismissed after missing 14 hours of class time (10%) or failure to maintain a 70% on all of the written HACC exams. After students successfully complete the requirements of the HACC program, they will need to successfully complete skill stations and a written exam provided by the Department of Health, Bureau of EMS.
NOTE: Registration will close the Friday two weeks prior to the start date of the classes. Register early - space is limited. No on-site registrations will be accepted.
NOTE: Tuition includes a Jones and Bartlett EMT textbook, a pocket mask, and a stethoscope.
No refunds will be issued after the first night of class unless for major medical or military reasons.
