GREENCASTLE - After a three-month vacancy, the Borough of Greencastle has a police chief.
Chambersburg police Sgt. John H. Phillippy, 46, was offered the position at a salary of $55,000, after a unanimous vote by borough council Monday night. He has been with the Chambersburg Police Department for 26 years, according to public safety committee chairman Paul Schemel.
His Home
His employment is conditional upon his passing the physical and psychological exams, and a background check, Schemel said.
Mayor Robert Eberly, acting police chief, said he hoped that Phillippy would be able to start by the middle of the month.
I am truly excited about being the chief here. I've got an investment in the community. This is home to me. It's more than just a job, it's a commitment, Phillippy said.
He wants to spend some time on the job before he announces long-range goals for the department.
Phillippy, a lifelong resident of the area, is a graduate of Greencastle-Antrim High School and Hagerstown Community College. Except for few years in which he had a residency requirement in Chambersburg, he has lived in the Greencastle-Antrim area all his life, he said. Phillippy has a wife and two children.
We have to dot the i's and cross the t's, but I'm fully anticipatory of coming here, he added. He did not have a firm idea of when he would start, but knows borough council wants it to be soon.
The borough has been without a full-time police chief since Peter Mozurkevich resigned Sept. 5. His resignation came the day after council voted unanimously to fire him.
Seventeen people applied for the position and three were interviewed by the public safety committee.
New Officers
In other police business, Charles Lemielle, an Iraq war veteran, who was hired as the borough's third full-time officer in October was introduced at Monday's meeting. Once he obtains his police certification, which should happen by the end of December, he will be able to begin work. Lemielle comes to Greencastle from Bradford.
In addition, Derek Newton was hired by council last night as the fourth full-time officer, again pending clearances.
That brings the police force to a total of four full-time and six part-time officers.
Congratulations and Best Wishes to John are indeed the order of the day! ! ! ! !
Looks like they finally made the right choice this time!
