Former fire department president faces assault charge

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A security guard for the Franklin County Sheriff's Office who is a former president of the Fayetteville (Pa.) Volunteer Fire Department has been charged with sexually assaulting a 3-year-old boy, according to Chambersburg police.
The charge was filed Thursday against Raymond E. Rotz at the office of Magisterial District Judge Gary Carter. Detective William Frisby said Rotz, 67, of Chambersburg, will be issued a summons on the charge.
A staff member at Carter's office said no dates had been set for arraignment or a preliminary hearing.
The affidavit of probable cause stated that a relative of the boy told police on Nov. 20 that he believed the child had been sexually assaulted by Rotz. The man told police that Rotz and the child were in the same room when the boy said he had been inappropriately touched by Rotz.
The man told police that Rotz reacted by "running from the apartment," according to the affidavit.
Police said Rotz was interviewed at borough police headquarters Jan. 5 and provided a written statement to police.
Rotz had been working part time as a security guard, staffing metal detectors at county buildings since June 2004, Sheriff Robert Wollyung said Wednesday.
"We were made aware of the charges and Mr. Rotz is now on extended leave without pay" pending the outcome of the case, Wollyung said.
Lee Kyler, treasurer of the Fayetteville Volunteer Fire Department, said Thursday that Rotz served as president during much of the 1980s and 1990s and was re-elected president in 2004. Current president Mark Bumbaugh said Rotz took a medical leave of absence in July 2006 and resigned as president Sept. 28.
The indecent assault charge filed against Rotz is a first-degree misdemeanor and carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
