Well I understand the FCFCA is going to contract with Bucks Community College to give the students a Fire Science class to take the place of the Protective Services program at the school. I understand it is only going to involve fire related programs. What happened to the EMT program for the folks? If we are trying to get the folks prepared for a career in the service they are going to need their EMT. I may be wrong but all the folks I have spoken with in the career field have either went in with their EMT or had to get it when they went into the academy. Was this program discussed at the FCFCA meeting? Just curious!

if vo-tech is no longer going to be a part of the protective services program, Who is going to hand out grades? if they are no long part of a official school program they will have to fall under the child labor laws. who is going to cover there insurance? who from buck has the teacher certifications to teach high school? who is the chief's assocition to pick what is to be tought? who even teaches for bucks other then Baker,North,Dale and Help? i think that there is more questions then the chief's assocition have tought of. if the assocition can't put a training weekend together what make them think they can run a five day a week program for 9 months. vo-tech should keep the program!

I just talked to a school superintendent and some of you are way off on your posts. First, the decision has been made by the superintendents to close the program and now the Career Center Board needs to make it offical. Just a formality. The reasons he gave me why they decided to close it, would make me understand why it should be closed. So, before all of you go around stating what you think or want to believe are facts, I suggest that you talk with your school superintendents. It was an enlightening discussion I had. I asked him what if the Fire Chiefs took it over and he stated that they had checked into it but it was not a feasible solution. He said where Bucks comes into the picture is that an individual could get the training that the FCCTC was offering, on their own at very reduced cost compared to the FCCTC providing it.

I attended FCCTC's program, with out this program I would not be in this career field now. I don't understand how the school could allow a program as successful as this one to be given up on. Just think if it was not for a school district changing classes around this would not have happened. How many Fire or EMS officers in this county have come from this program?

Fillerup, Well sir I am sure you have the inside info on the situation and I am sure you probably know all the inside poop but let me say this with all due respect.... I have had to live it for the last 2 months and I have set in on the meetings with the students and the admins of the school in ref to their career opportunities as far as the school goes and I will say the reasons they are being given is allot more complex then I'm sure you even know. So do me a favor come into school and let me know whats going on so these students can hear the real reason the class is getting cut. I'm sure you may get a surprise also!

I was just advised that the Protective Services items here at the center are to be turned over to the Franklin County Fire Chiefs Association if they want the items to help with the continuation of the class. If this is true (and not fictitious lies) then please let me know so I can inventory what all is here and get you a list. That way you can tell me what you want and what to get rid of! Thanks!

Good Morning all, There will be a meeting with the Chambersburg Administration concerning next years schedule. The group decided the best way to handle the announcement of this schedule is to have a community meeting. The meeting is scheduled for Monday 12, 2006 at 1900 hrs in the CASHS Auditorium. It would be a good time for all those individuals in the Fire and EMS communities to come to this meeting and show their support as well as any comments they may have in support of the Protective Services program. The topics that will be discussed at the meeting will be: Public Relations Schedule Staff Transportation Student Management Activities To try and salvage a positive class through the Career Center we all need to work together and show the powers to be that there is a real need for this type of training in Franklin County. Please (if possible) try and attend to show the committee as well as the community that the young folks are the future of our departments! Thanks to all! Craig

Hey, what happened on the 12th at the meeting? Just an OF that is interested, because myself and K North had the priviledge of serving on the very first "committee" that even thought of offering this course at the high school level. As I remember, Dalton Paul and Ken Baker from the vo-tech school whole-heartedly supported the program, even when the state said they wouldn't help fund it because not enough students would have gainful employment in the Fire or EMS service within Franklin County. Back then, nobody in a position of authority in the fire service even had an inkling that they would ever hire firefighters or EMS personnel, so they were no help in getting the program started. So with our "urging", those guys at the vo-tech (and all the school districts they represented) took a big chance and ran the program regardless of what the state said.
Also, if my feable mind can recall, one of the existing programs we contacted for reference and background info was Bucks County. I also remember ELCO School District, Lancaster County and a school out in Pittsburgh. They were doing it before we thought it would be cool, so I guess I'm back to my original question. How did the meeting go? Will the education of fire, police and ems personnel be better or worse for Franklin County? What do you hoser think?
