KIND OF WORK: This is a skilled, professional position involving all phases of emergency medical services operations including basic life support duties, as well as routine non-emergency assignment. Shifts will be scheduled for maximum support of Emergency Medical Services operations. Direction is received through the Operations division of SAEMS.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
▪ Respond on emergency apparatus to render aid to sick and injured persons and provide BLS care at a wide variety of emergency incidents
▪ Drive and operate emergency vehicles and apparatus
▪ Maintain equipment
▪ Restock supplies and maintain emergency vehicle readiness by performing regular maintenance and inspections
▪ Write accurate and legible reports regarding incidents and patient care
▪ Perform routine administrative tasks
▪ Maintain knowledge of area roads and subdivisions
▪ Maintain knowledge of current Pennsylvania Protocols, Triage Plan and Mass Casualty operations
▪ Perform other related duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS: (special requirements continue below)
▪ High school graduation or the equivalent; American citizenship; minimum age 18 years
▪ Preference may be given for additional related education, training and/or experience
▪ Sufficient knowledge of Pennsylvania Pre-hospital Medical Protocols to effectively work as a sole BLS provider
▪ Ability to apply training to quickly, calmly and effectively respond to emergencies using good judgment and independent action
▪ Strong and effective spoken and written (English) communication skills, including the ability to understand and carry out orders and standard operating procedures
▪ Strong physical condition due to the spontaneous physical demands of comprehensive emergency medical services (e.g. respond to all types of emergency situations; rescue operations; lift patients of any size/weight using various devices; use manual and mechanical tools during emergency operations; wear and use specialized protective equipment including respirators), all of which may require standing, walking, running, lifting, bending, stooping, driving, climbing stairs/ladders, crawling and working outdoors in all types of weather conditions
▪ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, fire and rescue personnel and the general public
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
▪ Current certification as a PA State Emergency Medical Technician
▪ Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support
▪ Hazardous materials operations level training through a recognized certification body
▪ NIMS ICS 100 and 700 certification
▪ Successful completion of an Emergency Vehicle Operators Course
▪ Possession of a valid automobile operator's license

2) A written examination based on Pennsylvania Pre-hospital Medical Protocols
3) A practical skills evaluation
4) A spoken examination
5) One or more interviews
6) A pre-employment background investigation

PROBATIONARY PERIOD:
Employees normally serve a probationary period of 60 days before attaining regular status. However, the length of the probationary period may vary. The probationary period is considered part of the examination procedure.
SPECIAL TESTING:
Shippensburg Area EMS employees are subject to probable cause drug testing. Some positions are also subject to post-accident, return-to-duty and/or random drug and alcohol testing, as well as other specialized testing particular to the position involved.
Paid Time Off:
PTO is accrued and available for use after 60 days of continued employment.
STD
Short Term Disability is available for use during extended illnesses in lieu of PTO.
FRINGE BENEFITS:
Regular Full Time employees may elect to join the department’s health plans, which include medical, hospitalization and major medical. The employee's share of the premium will be paid by means of a regular payroll deduction.
