Well, personally, I like the drink and run part of this conversation, so if y'all don't mind I think I will have another beer or two while I Chime in, after all, it only is an issue if it occurs while in a Chief's Vehicle, sorry, just kidding, couldn't resist.
Let's face it. I have alot of years in the Fire Service, and thank GOD to this point, I have never had to make the call that tell's someone that we are transporting their loved on to the hospital, or worse.
We say that we do what it takes to get the Job done. Well, maybe so, but over the years we have changed the standards, or at least we should have to how we will do things and what we require to accomplish this. Is gloves a big issue. Everyone can sit here and say, not really, the JOB still got done this time. Sometimes you have to improvise. We improvise all the time on Fire and Rescue responses, but WE SHOULD NEVER COMPROMISE WITH SAFETY. Maybe the other question is where was the safety officer that is supposed to be assigned on every working incident no matter what the nature. Maybe he would have been able to correct the problem should we have had one in place. Bending the rules to get the job done this time only leads to the next time, and soon after someone gets hurts.
As far as confinement or entrapment. When my current department arrives on the scene, all equipment is taken off the rescue and put into a staging area so that whether it is confinement or entrapment the job gets done with fewer interruption. My mindset can't change or try to differentiate the two. I plan for the worst and hope for the best.
So now I think I will go and have another been, want one tag.
