Ok the PA House and Senate in Harrisburg have been very busy and as many may have herd on the news the Senate has said they are done for the remainder of the year and will not be returning after their "Election Break". Well I for one don't trust them and we must keep the fight going cause money talks and we all know that each of the elected officals need to get that money from the special interest groups to stockpile their campaign war chest.
Yesterday the Sprinkler Bill was brought to the senate floor for a vote and a provission was added to HB 1196 that would give a one year extension on the January 1, 2011 current deadline to impliment sprnklers in all new construction SFD's. As a result of a 37-12 vote the Senate passed this amendment and sent it back to the House Rules Committee to debate with a possible vote on the house floor to come.
Here are the 12 senators that stood up for firefighter and civilian safety and voted to not ammend the current bill. Senators Farnese, Greenleaf, Hughes, Kitchen, Leach, Mcilhinney, Stack, Tartaglione, Tomlinson, Washington, Waugh (One of our own from York County), and Williams.
Now we need to keep the pressure on the House members and make sure that the ammendment doesn't get approved in the house. What we all need to do is contact our local house of representatives and tell them to not support the ammendment to HB 1196. With limited days left in the house session calendar I could see this run through the House Rules Committee very fast.
Some may ask what is wrong with a 1 year extension. Well the issue here is life safety for both the community and the firefighters and if we allow the 1 year extension to happen all we are doing is giving the PBA a 1 year extension to buy votes in the house and senate and have the entire code removed which has been their intention from the start. We need to put a stop to this and make sure the current ammendment doesn't pass.
EVERYONE PLEASE CALL YOUR LOCAL HOUSE REPESENTATIVE AND TELL THEM TO VOTE NO ON HB1196 WITH THE AMMENDMENT.
Also if your not signed up yet please go to www.pesla.org and sign up for our legislative alerts so you can be kept up to date on all the happenings as they relate to the emergency service community.
