I am looking for opinions on the starting of a Wilderness/lost persons SAR (Search and Rescue) Team. I belonged to Team 600 in Indiana County for quite some years prior to relocating. I feel this County would benefit from this type of service. If I have enough Interest I want to hold a interest meeting. Then draw a letter for the Sheriff, as by PA law the County Sheriff oversees all SAR operations in their respective county.
Reply with feedback. Lets keep this on the level, not off the wall.
Thanks TA DE WITT

I just recently moved into the county and am trying to find such a team also. I have past experience and training in this type of rescue genre. Pleases let me know if this idea is still going forward. I am very interest and I also have canine that I started to train for wilderness scent tracking. I also have some resources that may very useful in starting such a venture.

Okay, can we agree on a date and location for an informational meeting to start the ball rolling.
To get a SAR Team started we need to plan our logistics of Dispatch Procedure, Initial coverage area, authority from the Sheriff and County Commissioners, Rank and File for Officers - Line and Administrative, Training (FC Training Center), Vehicle acquiring for CP, Standards for Man Trackers, K9 - Tracking/Trailing and Air Scenting, K9 Handler responsibility and training, K9 Agility testing and on line testing, radio frequency (Emerg Mgt).
So as you all see there is a large amount of COMMITMENT before we just beat the brush.
So many different specialty fields in SAR, SAR Management, Man Trackers, Grid Searchers, K9 Handlers, Equestrian Team Members, Fund raising for equipment, etc.....
The first step is to meet and draw a vision/mission statement to meet with the Commissioners and Sheriff on.
The Team I was involved with received great support from the County Level to the Degree that the county insured the Command Post, covered the workman's comp issue and donated a Mini Bus from Transportation for the CP.
Lets get together and do this........... as the NASAR (National Search and Rescue) motto Search is an EMERGENCY......... lets do this SO others may Live....................
