A long time friend of our EMS family, Mills Cowling, a man known by many in EMS, and who had been a paramedic in Franklin County since 1984 (when the Chambersburg division of West Shore EMS was Chambersburg Area Advanced Life Support) before relocating to Alabama a few years back, died on Tuesday Dec 19th. He had been sick for a number of years ever since having a kidney transport and he died from complications with his heart and diabetes. Please keep Mills in your prayers.

Doug,
Thanks for the info.
Mills taught me Basic EMT in 1993. He was tough, very complete, and so "street smart". I feel fortunate to have been one of his students.

Our Thoughts & Prayers are with his family. He taught alot of people in this county and helped bring EMS to the next level in this county. Paramedic 113 will always be remembered.

Mills was a great guy, an excellent EMT instructor when I took it in shippensburg 1995. You always came away a better person every time you got to work with Mills.

To run one call with Mills was to remember him forever...
Like some have already mentioned, my first contact with Mills was in EMT class, although mine was in '91. I never forgot that accent, his mispronunciation of "Oxygen", or his straightforward southern boy ways.
I was sad the day he stopped running around here and moved away. He will be sorely missed.

Oh yes Caff, he was one of a kind and Paramedic 1-firteen's (113) mis-pronouciation would be "Oxa-gan".
Those that lived at the station can remember the many, many times he would come in the bunk-room with that damn pen light, shine it in your eyes and annouce that he wanted you to drive him on a routine.
I vividly remember one time he did that with me on Thanksgiving many years ago and as soon as we loaded the PT into the back of the ambo, we got hit for a working house fire with 17 on Grindstone Hill Road. And if my feeble memory serves me correct, it wasn't even my turn, it was Baker or Step's turn !!
His response was to stick his head up into the and simply state "Snooze ya looze" !!

I remember Mills from back in the day (1993) when he instructed my basic course at Co.18. He was one of the best (and thorough) EMS instructors I have ever had. Always professional and calm with his demeanor and full of little tips and pointers for the street.
He was definitely a model to follow.

Brian,
Thanks for the information. I will post this in the General EMS section also. In my opinion, your father was a likable legend and is not soon to be forgotten by those of us who had the opportunity to run with him.
