FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Pennsylvania State Police in Gettysburg, Pa., were investigating a vehicle accident Thursday night in which a firefighter en route to a mountain fire in Greene Township in Franklin County was killed.
Buchanan Valley Fire Co. Deputy Chief John Parr confirmed that a member of Orrtanna, Pa., fire company was killed in the line of duty while going to the fire in Michaux State Forest. He said no other details would be released until today.
State police had not issued a news release on the accident as of Thursday night.
Firefighters were called out Thursday afternoon and later rescued a hunter who fell from a tree, according to Fayetteville Volunteer Fire Co. Chief Bob Monn.
The fire off Ridge Road in Greene Township was called in at 5:51 p.m. and the cause was under investigation, Monn said. Two fire companies from Shippensburg, Pa., assisted, along with firefighters from Mont Alto, Pa., Buchanan Valley and the Alpha Unit of the state Forestry Bureau, he said.
The Pine Grove Strike Team Task Force, a group of firefighters specializing in mountain fires, also was called in by the Alpha Unit, Monn said.
The fire burned about three acres and firefighters were still at the scene after 10 p.m. keeping an eye on the area, he said.
Conditions in the forest were very dry, but firefighters benefited from the lack of wind, which could have made the blaze more serious, Monn said.
While the fire was being fought, rescue personnel from Fayetteville and Mont Alto were called to an area off Irish Plantation Road in Guilford Township where a hunter had fallen from a tree, Monn said. That was called in at 6:48 p.m. and an all-terrain vehicle from Mont Alto was used to help get the unidentified man out of the woods, he said.
The man appeared to have sustained injuries to his ribs and was taken to Chambersburg (Pa.) Hospital, Monn said.
