Can someone please explain why the departments in this county plaster [shadow=gold,left,300]VOLUNTEERS[/shadow] on their rigs. Is there any other catagory in this county other than volunteers. YEAH YEAH there are paid drivers at a few, paid EMTs all over like the plague, and chambersburg has their paid drivers and ambulance jockeys. So why is it we still need to billboard the fact we are VOLUNTEERS like anyone else cares or is it so that we can show the public where their donations go.

maybe its so that since its so hard to get volunteers to join stations, someone may just see it and want to join....who knows..

LC, I agree with bambam, maybe it's because they are just proud to be volunteers. Like Caff said in the thread about the new Sta. 4 shirts, it's all about pride in your company and our companies are proud to be volunteers and I don't see a problem with that. -Rush P.S. If it doesn't say "VOLUNTEER", what would you like it to say?

You should be proud of the station that you volunteer for and that your dept. is still a volunteer dept. and hasn't fallen in to the paid status yet!

There are more and more people moving into our locals that are from the metro Maryland-DC area, Many of them think that they still have a full career departments responding to their emergency.
For the most part, we (the volunteers) do not have funding coming from the tax base. We still have to fund raise to make the big trucks hit the streets. Even the department that have career staff are VOLUNTEER fire companies with a few paid people, not a paid department with a few volunteers.
It good to let the public know that we are volunteering to save them and there property.

Volunteers are some people who spends time away from home and family working only to better the community instead of raising taxes for a paid department. Volunteer Firefighters first began when this country started. And its going to be here for long time.

Well thank you Ben Franklin. With that bit of hooked on phonics rambling I know this world is a better place.
Hey Brad, I was told last week you learned to spell firefighter. now this week you say "I are a firefighter" Oh yeah another bit of wisdom I must share with you is when driving on the roadway it is no longer acceptable to stay to the right for you my son it is STAY TO THE LEFT ride the yellow line. It's cheaper and less stressful on the mirror industry.

Look some of your volunteers are paid somewhere else so on the days off they vounteer. If you look at most departments the same members are the ones vounteering running most of the calls. Volunteers are slowly getting less and less every day.

Look some of your volunteers are paid somewhere else so on the days off they vounteer. Since when did we catagorize different types of volunteers? If they are running with a company and not getting paid for it they are volunteering are they not? Whether they are paid somewhere else or not has nothing to do with it. As far as having fewer and fewer volunteers, that unfortunately is becoming the case. This doesn't mean that we can give up trying to recruit more members though. Every type of organization will fall on "hard times" when the membership will drop but if you don't give up things will work out in the end. Each and every VOLUNTEER (and I say that with pride) knows that what they do is VERY IMPORTANT and as long as the community continues to see that, there should always be people willing to volunteer.

I think they just have pride in the fact that they can get the piece out the door with volunteers. Unlike many places in the country. Any dept. could write that on their piece, Why they don't? ??
